A project is now in the works to create a community mural which will focus on all of the history aspects Eldred has to offer.
The mural is through a “Keep PA Beautiful — Fresh Paint Days” grant, and would be located on the Eldred Area Free Library.
Eldred resident Lou Ann Hurrle decided to organize the fundraiser after learning the grant only could account for the cost of paint, as well as $50 in supplies.
Any additional costs to the mural would not be covered.
Hurrle took to gofundme because she believes that social media is an effective way to get the word out there.
“I know that with being busy it can be hard to bring money somewhere, so this is something convenient and quick,” she stated.
And quick is just what they are looking for, as funds need to be raised for the project to be completed between Sept. 1 and 30.
The mural will feature a patriotic scene, which will reflect on all of the history within Eldred.
“We want to focus on all of the historic values in this town, that’s what it’s all about,” said Hurrle. “The goal is to also feature that there was a munitions plant here somewhere on the mural.”
Being from Buffalo, N.Y., Hurrle stated she loves the small town feel of the community, and the feeling of safety it brings.
She believes that this mural is a chance to continue what makes Eldred a beautiful town to live in.
“When you drive through areas and see beautification and progress, that is a good change,” she stated.
Hurrle believes a mural can also provide a sense of welcoming for all individuals that drive through, and serve as a reminder of the history for those that live there.
She wants everyone to see that Eldred is a great place to live.
“Urban Inspirations” of Buffalo, N.Y., will be painting the mural at a reduced rate.
Hurrle said she went to school with the artist of the company, and that she contacted him through Facebook because she knew that he had done work with murals in the past.
She originally contacted him to see if he would even be able to do the mural, as the grant was for 20 gallons of paint, and she wasn’t sure how far that could stretch.
Local artists were also contacted who have previously painted murals; however those approached were unable to do the project.
The McKean County Artists Association was approached about the mural as well, but their business was not up and running soon enough.
Hurrle hopes they will meet their goal very quickly.
Volunteers for the construction process of the mural have stepped forward, something that is much needed. In the past five days, the fundraiser has raised $350 of its $1,000 goal.
“It is absolutely amazing how many people have stepped forward,” said Hurrle.
The library is located near the Eldred World War II Museum.
