Softball: O-E edges Port; BHS loses; Coudy, Smethport win

DUKE CENTER — Alyssa Shelander pitched a five-hitter and scored the game-winning run to lead Otto-Eldred to a 2-1 victory over Port Allegany in the Lady Terrors final regular season softball game Wednesday.

O-E won eight of its last 10 games to finish the season 9-7.

“It was senior night and all our girls came to play,” O-E coach Roger Veilleux said.

In the circle, Shelander recorded three strikeouts and gave up no walks.

Her key play, however, came in the bottom of the fourth where O-E scored both of its runs. Kirstene Renninger belted a one-out single, Shelander followed with an RBI triple and then scored on a passed ball to put the Lady Terrors up 2-0.

The Lady Gators (7-9) had an opportunity to take the lead in the top of the sixth, but could only plate one run.

“Port scored and had runners on first and second with no outs,” Veilleux explained. “We threw a girl out at home on a relay for the first out, got a fly ball for the second out and then a popup to get out of the inning. We played heck of a defense.”

Port’s Mackenzie Burr was the losing pitcher despite a three-hitter. She also recorded four strikeouts and gave up no walks.

“The pitching was outstanding on both sides,” Veilleux emphasized.

Next action for Otto-Eldred will be the District 9 playoffs.

    Punxsutawney 13, Bradford 1, 5 inn.

The Lady Chucks used an eight-run second inning outburst to pull away from Bradford for a 13-1 victory on Wednesday.

Abby Gigliotti put a bow on the proceedings with a two-run home run in the fourth inning.

Other Lady Chucks with big days at the plate were Morgan Adamson (triple, two RBIs, two runs), Tessa Winebark (triple, two RBIs), and Grace Aikens (2-for-3, double, two RBIs).

Starter Alli Ishman went four-plus innings, allowing one walk and seven hits.

Emily Warner drove in Bradford’s lone run with an RBI single in the bottom of the first that scored Alyssa Persichini. Kaylee Brown went 2-for-3, while also tossing five innings on the mound, finishing with one strikeout and two walks.

    Coudersport 13, Galeton 3

GALETON — Coudersport used a five-run seventh inning to put the finishing touches on a 10-run victory over Galeton and lay claim to the North Tier League softball title on Wednesday.

The Lady Falcons finish the league with a 12-2 record and are 13-4 overall.

“I was happy how the kids bounced back today after losing out last two games,” Coudersport coach Dan Counts said. “We’re a fairly young team with only four seniors and we’ve made progress at times.

“Today we took advantage of their mistakes, but Galeton battled. They’re struggling right now,” he added.

Madison Smith was the winning pitcher, scattering five hits, fanning nine batters and issuing just three walks.

At the plate for the winners, Shaylyn Black (3-for-5) had a double and two RBIs, Emma Rae Easton (3-for-3) doubled and had three RBIs, Joplyn Osgood (3-for-5) had one RBI and scored three runs, and Chelsea Streich belted a double and had one RBI.

The losing pitcher was Regan Fuller who gave up 11 hits, had six strikeouts and gave up four walks.

    M. Lechler went 2-for-3 for Galeton.

    Smethport 12, Oswayo Valley 2, 6 inn.

SMETHPORT — Smethport stretched its win streak to 11 games following an easy 10-run, six-inning win over Oswayo Valley on Wednesday. The Lady Hubbers are now 12-5 on the season.

Emily Treat picked up the win in the circle with a three-hitter. She struck out four batters and gave up just two walks.

At the plate she helped herself with a pair of RBIs and was backed by Olivia Goodwill (3-for-3)  with a double and three RBIs, Haleigh Larson (3-for-3) with a double and two RBIs, and Sam Tanner with a pair of RBIs.

Sharing pitching duties for Oswayo Valley were Madison Nudd and K. West. They gave up eight hits, had five strikeouts and issued six walks.

At the plate for the Lady Green Wave, J. Snyder went 2-for-3.

The Lady Hubbers close out the regular season today at Kane.

“We’ve played eight games in two weeks and the girls are just gutting it out,” Smethport coach Jon Peterson said.
