PUNXSUTAWNEY — It was a closer game than the scoreline suggested, but the Owls simply couldn’t get enough offense going as Bradford fell to Punxsutawney 5-1.
Punxsy’s Logan Johnston tossed a complete game two-hitter, striking out nine batters while also allowing just two walks.
Isaac Stauffer came up with the big blow of the game, notching a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth to essentially put the game away.
Bradford’s Tom Guay pitched a solid game, striking out two and walking four.
“He pitched really well,” Owls coach Andy Carlson said. “It was a clean game by both teams. They just had a bunch of balls that fell in. We didn’t have the greatest at-bats today.”
Dan Manion knocked in Bradford’s only run on an RBI single in the sixth inning. Tyler Gigliotti’s double represented the Owls’ only other base hit.
Joey DiPietro finished with two hits for the Chucks.
Bradford (6-12) will be at Pitt-Bradford this afternoon for Senior Night when the Owls host Otto-Eldred.
Otto-Eldred 8, Port Allegany 1
DUKE CENTER — It wasn’t the cleanest performance the Terrors have had all year, but they’ll certainly take the ‘W’ they earned on Wednesday.
Andrew Sheeler provided a strong performance on the mound, going the distance for Otto while striking out seven and walking none.
Andrew Sheeler, Cameron Magee, and Seth Drummond all registered RBI singles for the Terrors.
“We didn’t play that great tonight,” O-E coach Jame Thomas said. “We have our ups and downs.”
Port Allegany’s only run came via an RBI triple by Devin Gustin (2-for-3). Gustin also pitched several strong innings of relief, striking out six batters while walking two.
“Port’s kids never gave up,” Thomas said. “We had the game but they kept fighting. We never really felt safe with the lead. They’re going to have a good team coming up next year.”
Otto-Eldred (13-3) visits Bradford this afternoon.
Oswayo Valley 12, Smethport 1
SMETHPORT — Visiting Oswayo Valley opened a 5-0 lead after two innings went on to an 11-run victory over Smethport on Wednesday.
“They are just a very, very good team,” Smethport coach Colby Austin said. “They are well coached and they just came in and did what they had to do.”
The Green Wave got a three-hitter from the pitching tandem of Garren Black and Graves. They also combined for 12 strikeouts.
At the plate, Black doubled and had two RBIs in the game, while G. Babcock (3-for-4) also had a double.
Smethport avoided the shutout in the bottom of the seventh inning when Orion Alexis tripled and came home to get the Hubbers on the board.
Austin Wilber and Alexis shared mound duties for the Hubbers and were touched for 11 hits.
Smethport (5-10) is back in action today at Kane.
