The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford will hold camps from art to X-Treme Science for children age 4 to 18 this summer.
First up is Pot-Pot-Pottery for ages 10 to 16 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. June 5-9 in the ceramics studio on campus. Students will learn hand building and coil construction. Pickup day for pieces is 9 to 10 a.m. June 12. Cost is $89.
During the same week, head men’s basketball coach Britt Moore and head women’s basketball coach Sean Brown will hold a co-ed basketball camp for campers entering grades 3-11. Camp will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 5-8 and includes fundamentals stations, games, lecture and 5-on-5 games. Cost is $135. On June 12-14 and again July 17-19, the SuperGirl Leadership Experience for campers age 10-14 will take place from 8:30 a.m. to noon in the 5th Floor Ballroom of Marilyn Horne Hall at 2 Marilyn Horne Way in Bradford. Designed for future girl-leaders, this three-session training experience will feature activities designed to help girls communicate, lead with confidence, and feel good about their own unique talents and gifts. Participants will learn how to embrace a positive self-image, manage conflict successfully without drama, advocate for themselves, and make smart choices in the world of social media. Each session includes fun activities that will get the group moving, laughing and thinking. Each session concludes at noon with an awards ceremony. The cost is $120.
Game Programming 101 is designed for students age 10-14 and will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, June 26, 28 and 30 in Swarts Hall. In this camp, students will use JavaScript to learn video game programming in an easy and fun way. They will interact with Minecraft characters, create their own Flappy Bird Game, join Anna and Elsa from Frozen in a quest, create digital art and program Droids in Star Wars. The cost is $69.
Also during the week of June 26-29, Youth Writing Spectacular for ages 9 through 14 will take place from 9 to 11:30 a.m. in Room 158 of the Richard E. McDowell Sport and Fitness Center. This creative writing cap is for young writers who want to develop their talent and passion for writing fiction, nonfiction and poetry. An open mic night for the young writers will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. June 29 in the Harriett B. Wick Chapel.
Head women’s soccer coach Marquis Walker is holding nine sessions of soccer camp this summer for players from age 4 to 18. Costs range from $95 for half-day Little Stars camp June 26-30 and July 10-14 to $265 for residential high school boys and girls team camps in July. Game Programming: Advanced is for students ages 14-18 with previous game programming experience. It is for students who have already dabbled, but want to push themselves, learn more and finish a game. Students will learn game mechanics and coding for common game scenarios, programming for game development and 3D modeling, game testing and how to publish a game for the public to download. Class will take place from 9 a.m. to noon Monday, Wednesday and Friday July 10, 12 and 14 in Swarts Hall. The cost is $69.
ArtXperience for ages 10-15 will take place from 8:30 to 11 a.m. July 17-19 in Room 604 of Marilyn Horne Hall in downtown Bradford. Led by instructor Courtney Mealy, students will experience creativity through art and discover a new medium each day. Cost is $69.
Photography 101 for students age 10-16 will be held from 8:30 to 11 a.m. July 19-21 in Room 158 of the McDowell Sport and Fitness Center. Enjoy the outdoors with a three-day photography camp. Cost is $69.
Students age 10-16 can get a taste of Television Studio Production from 9 a.m. to noon July 24 and 25 in Blaisdell Hall on campus with Jeff Guterman, associate professor of broadcast communications. Students will learn how to create television news broadcasts, televised puppet shows and other types of programs in a real-life, multi-camera digital studio environment. Cost is $59.
X-Treme Science Camp is back for campers age 7 to 11 from 8:30 a.m .to noon July 24-26 in Swarts Hall on campus. Students will participate in labs and activities dealing with many different areas of science. Cost is $85.
Finally, Pets ’n’ Vets Camp will be held Aug. 15-17 in Fisher Hall on campus. The morning session – 8:30 a.m. to noon – is for campers who have completed grades 1-3. The afternoon session – 1:30 to 5 p.m. – is for campers who have completed grades 4-6. Hand-on learning is the primary focus of this camp experience.
