EMPORIUM — An Emporium man has been charged with the alleged rape of an 8-year-old girl at a residence in the borough.
Shane Michael Haskins, 35, is charged with rape, statutory sexual assault and aggravated indecent assault, first-degree felonies; sexual assault and two counts of aggravated indecent assault, second-degree felonies; endangering the welfare of children, corruption of minors and unlawful contact with a minor, third-degree felonies; indecent assault, a first-degree misdemeanor; and indecent assault, a second-degree misdemeanor.
According to court records, in December, the allegations came to light when an older sibling was babysitting an 8-year-old girl, checked on her in her bedroom and found her acting out a sexual situation with a stuffed animal. The older child told the children’s mother, who asked the younger child why she was doing that. The 8-year-old told her mother she was pretending the stuffed animal was Haskins, court records read.
The young girl was interviewed in January at the McKean County Children’s Advocacy Center. While she lacked the vocabulary or knowledge to explain what Haskins allegedly did, she was able to explain to a forensic interviewer and police that Haskins had sexual contact or intercourse with her on more than one occasion, the court records read.
Haskins was arraigned before District Judge Barry Brown in Emporium. He was released after posting $50,000 bail.
He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing at 9 a.m. May 4.
