Barnett, Buchsenschutz lead Port A. to OT victory; NoPo wins on late basket

PORT ALLEGANY — Port Allegany’s Cailey Barnett and Autumn Buchsenschutz combined for 41 points, but the Lady Gators needed double overtime to defeat Smethport 58-55, in their North Tier League basketball game Friday.

Barnett led the winners with 21 points, while Buchsenschutz threw in 20. Also in double figures for the winners was Erin Stauffer with 10 points.

The score was tied 45-45 at the end of regulation, 51-51 at the end of the first overtime and then a 7-4 scoring edge in the second OT gave Port Allegany the win.

“Autumn got a steal and made a layup and then we made some free throws down the stretch to get the three-point lead,” Port Allegany coach Jason Luther explained.

“I was proud of our kids because they were down in the second overtime and clawed their way back.

As a group they made plays when we needed them. It was a great high school basketball game.”

Buchsenschutz finished with nine steals and pulled down seven rebounds. Barnett had seven steals and six rebounds and Hannah Lathrop had a good night on the boards with seven rebounds.

Smethport’s Abbey Woodard led all scorers with a game-high 29 points, while teammates Katie Treat added 12 and Emily Treat 11.

“I have to credit their team,” Luther noted. “Abbey Woodard is a heck of a player and can do a lot of things well.”

Port Allegany, 7-6 overall, hosts Coudersport on Tuesday.

    Northern Potter 45, Galeton 43

ULYSSES — Northern Potter’s Kalie Cowburn recorded a double-double, but the Lady Panthers had to rally in the fourth quarter to pull out a victory over Galeton in North Tier League basketball action on Friday.

Cowburn scored a game-high 16 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for her double-double.

Galeton headed into the final period with a one-point, 37-36, lead.

However, the Lady Panthers’ Gracie Hamilton came up with a steal with just eight ticks left on the clock and the score tied 43-43. She took the ball in for a layup, but it came off the rim and Tori McCutcheon put the rebound back up and in for the victory.

The win upped the Lady Panthers record to 11-1 overall.

Olivia Pagano led the Lady Tigers (9-3, 5-2) with a double-double, scoring 14 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Teammate Cortney Parsell added 14 points.

    Otto-Eldred 61, Austin 17

DUKE CENTER – Otto-Eldred Lady defeated Austin in North Tier League girls basketball Friday night.

Ali Cousins led all scorers with 15 points and had five steals for the Lady Terrors (9-3, 6-1 NTL), while Brittany Greely pulled down eight rebounds.

“It was a good team win for us, we played everybody tonight,” Otto-Eldred head coach Barb Close said. “We have been fighting sickness all week and it was good to get back in the gym. We have a tough schedule with four games next week and hopefully we will be healthy next week.”

Madison Hooftallen scored 9 points for the Lady Panthers (0-12, 0-7 NTL).

Otto-Eldred will host Johnsonburg on Monday night and Galeton on Tuesday.

    Punxsutawney 74, Bradford 39

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Bradford’s Bri Wells scored a game-high 22 points, but the Lady Owls were no match for Punxsutawney, the Lady Chucks rolling to a District 9 League victory on Friday.

Ten Punxsy players put points in the book, led by Leah Miller with 17, Alli Lunger with 16 and Kate Horner with 15.

“Our inexperience showed at times,” said Bob Hannon, Bradford coach. “We would do things well, but not consistently. We have to play hard on every play. When we don’t, it hurts us.”

The Lady Chucks erupted for 23 points in the first quarter for a 23-8 lead and were up 43-18 at halftime. A 22-point third quarter by the hosts all but sealed the win.

Bradford, now 1-3 in the league and 1-13 overall, travels to Elk Catholic on Wednesday.

    Kane 59, Curwensville 37

CURWENSVILLE – Kane placed three players in double figures as they topped Curwensville in Allegheny Mountain League basketball action.

The Lady Wolves’ Trinity Clark and Ella Marconi each poured in 18 points and Hannah Buhl added 12 for the victors.

Maddison Weber scored 14 points and Christine Limbert added 10 for the Lady Golden Tide.

Kane returns to action Monday night hosting Elk Catholic.

Cameron County 65, Oswayo Valley 42

SHINGLEHOUSE – Madi Guisto scored 16 points and Madison Harrier hit for 13 as Cameron County defeated Oswayo Valley in North Tier League basketball on Friday.

With the win, Cameron County moves to 5-6 overall and 3-4 in the NTL.

Oswayo Valley’s Shayla Bickel poured in a game-high 24 points and Sarah Malagreno pulled down 10 rebounds for the hosts.

“We are a young team and are starting to get close competition-wise in the league,” Oswayo Valley head coach Kelly Rice said. “David Sullivan is a good coach and his girls a coached well and play well together.”

Oswayo Valley (5-7, 1-6 NTL) hosts Austin on Monday.
