MOUNT JEWETT — A camp on Kasson Road was destroyed by fire Wednesday afternoon in Hamlin Township.
No one was injured, said Brad Himes, second assistant chief of the Hamlin Township Volunteer Fire Department.
Himes said he believes the fire was called in by a neighbor, and firefighters were dispatched about 1:50 p.m. “We returned about a quarter to 5,” he said.
“It was under control pretty quickly,” Himes said, but firefighters spent time on tasks such as overhaul and looking for hotspots. “I would say it’s probably going to be a total loss.”
While the cause and origin of the fire remains under investigation by a state police fire marshal, Himes said there weren’t any suspicious circumstances.
In addition to Hamlin Township firefighters, the Mount Jewett and Smethport fire departments assisted on scene, and the Kane Volunteer Fire Department was on stand-by at Mount Jewett.
The McKean County Emergency Management Agency also offered on scene support. There were at least three men from the EMA helping on the hoseline and nozzle, noted Randy Himes, chief of the Hamlin Township Volunteer Department. He explained the fire departments are “usually short on help during the day. We were very grateful for their help.”
