COUDERSPORT — As part of an ongoing focus to use the latest technology and treatments available for patients, Cole Memorial Hospital in Coudersport has installed a next generation magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) unit, General Electric Optima MR450w 1.5T GEM.
Hospital officials said the equipment replaces the MRI that was installed in 2003.
Benefits of the new MRI unit include a large 70-centimeter opening (bore) for patient comfort and reducing claustrophobia; feet-first scanning, also for claustrophobic patients; an ability to accommodate patients up to 500 pounds; the ability to compensate for patient movement during the scanning, which leads to fewer repeat images; faster, higher quality scanning; software applications offer potential for 3-dimensional images and views in various planes; and noise dampening technology gives the patient a quieter, more relaxing experience.
“This is another example of Cole Memorial providing technology that is not only highly advanced for diagnostic exams, but also patient-centric, bringing state-of-the art treatment in-line with comfort and care for patients,” said Keith Hartjen, director of Diagnostic Imaging Services at Cole Memorial. “The high-quality images received complement the level of care provided by the Cole healthcare providers.”
Hospital officials said the magnet was lifted into the hospital by a crane in late September for installation at the renovated MRI suite. Staff training continues throughout the week, and they expect to be doing patient scans by Nov. 1. Cole Memorial’s MRI team sees approximately 200 patients each month.
Over the past year, additional diagnostic imaging upgrades included a new OEC 9900 C-Arm for on-demand surgical images in the hospital’s operating room.
