SMETHPORT (EC) — A motor vehicle accident at 293 W. Water St. in Smethport early Wednesday morning caused an electrical power outage for customers served by the borough’s electric department.

Smethport Borough Police said Steven Childs of Little Genesee, N.Y., was traveling to work, when he fell asleep and hit a utility pole. He suffered very minor injuries.

Police said charges are pending.

A crew from Penelec responded after the 5:56 a.m. alarm and set a new pole. Employees of the Smethport Electric Department then reconnected the lines. By 1:50 p.m., service was restored to all but three properties.
