The Latest: Escapee ‘shot when he didn’t comply’; 1 sought

MALONE, N.Y. (AP) — The latest on the hunt for two inmates who escaped from a maximum-security prison (all times local):

    ___

    9:10 p.m.

Authorities say one of two murder convicts who escaped from an upstate New York maximum-security prison three weeks ago wouldn’t comply with them when they found him in the woods and was shot and killed. The other is still on the loose.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo (KWOH’-moh) says the killing of Richard Matt came after a civilian complaint about a gunshot fired at a camping trailer.

Customs and border patrol agents were helicoptered in. The team smelled gunpowder near where the trailer was hit, a sign a gun had been fired. Matt was in nearby woods.

State police Superintendent Joseph D’Amico says agents told Matt to put up his hands. He says Matt “was shot when he didn’t comply.”

Police say Matt had a shotgun but didn’t use it.

Police are using officers, dogs and helicopters in an area of Malone about 22 square miles in the search for escapee David Sweat.

    ___

    8:55 p.m.

New York authorities say they don’t know for certain that two murderers who escaped from a maximum-security prison three weeks ago were together when one of them was killed by a border patrol agent.

Richard Matt was killed Friday afternoon in Malone, 30 miles from the prison. David Sweat is still on the loose.

Police are using officers, dogs and helicopters in an area about 22 square miles centered on Titusville Mountain State Forest in the search for Sweat. Just days ago the search area was up to 75 square miles.

    ___

    8:45 p.m.

New York’s governor says a convicted killer who escaped from an upstate New York maximum-security prison three weeks ago was armed when he was spotted and killed. Gov. Andrew Cuomo (KWOH’-moh) says the killing of Richard Matt came after a civilian complaint about a gunshot fired at a camping trailer in Malone.

Cuomo says authorities don’t know where escapee David Sweat is.

Cuomo says customs and border patrol agents were helicoptered in to find Matt. He says the team smelled gunpowder in a nearby area, a sign a gun had been fired.

State police say the team came upon Matt in the woods, challenged him and shot and killed him.

    8:30 p.m.

Police looking for a murder convict who escaped from a maximum-security upstate New York prison three weeks ago have narrowed the search area after killing an inmate who escaped with him.

Police are using officers, dogs and helicopters in an area about 22 square miles centered on Titusville Mountain State Forest in Malone. Just days ago the search area was up to 75 square miles.

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer says escapee Richard Matt was killed Friday afternoon by a border patrol agent from Vermont. Fellow escapee David Sweat is on the loose.

Sweat was serving a sentence of life without parole in the killing of a sheriff’s deputy. Matt was serving 25 years to life for killing and dismembering his former boss.

A prison guard and a prison tailor shop instructor have been accused of helping the inmates escape by smuggling them tools hidden inside hamburger meat.

    ___

    8:20 p.m.

Police in upstate New York say they’re using officers, dogs and helicopters to search a wooded area for a convicted murderer who escaped from prison three weeks ago. Another violent inmate who escaped with him has been shot and killed.

Police are swarming the woods as the sun sets in Malone, where they believe David Sweat is hiding. Richard Matt was killed in the area earlier Friday.

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer says Matt was killed by a federal border patrol agent from Vermont. He says searchers with dogs closed in on the pair after receiving a 911 call from a woman who heard “an intruder” knock on her door.

Area resident Mitch Johnson says his friend Bob Willett has a cabin in the area and heard the “Pop pop pop pop pop pop pop” of gunfire.

    ___

    7:35 p.m.

A man says one of his best friends saw a misplaced liquor bottle at his upstate New York cabin and alerted police who had been searching for two escaped prisoners. Shortly after those officers shot and killed one of the escapees nearby.

Escaped murder convict Richard Matt was killed Friday afternoon. Fellow escapee David Sweat is still on the loose.

Mitch Johnson says his friend Bob Willett checked earlier Friday on his hunting cabin in Malone. He says Willett told him he noticed on a table a liquor bottle that wasn’t there the day before.

Police sent a team to the camp area. Willett and police later heard a gunshot in the woods.

Johnson says Willett told him officers flooded the woods and then more shots were heard. He says Willett heard, “Pop pop pop pop pop pop pop.”

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer says at least one of the two escapees was armed.

    ___

    6:50 p.m.

New York’s U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer says at least one of the two killers who escaped from an upstate maximum-security prison was armed when they were tracked by dogs and one was killed.

He says, “There was shooting heard in the woods.”

Richard Matt was killed Friday by a federal border patrol agent from Vermont.

David Sweat is still on the loose. Police looking for Sweat are trucking floodlights into a heavily wooded area in Malone where they believe he’s hiding and where Matt was killed. The site is about 30 miles from the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, where the inmates escaped June 6.

Sweat was serving a sentence of life without parole in the killing of a sheriff’s deputy. Matt was serving 25 years to life for the killing and dismembering of his former boss.

A prison guard and a prison tailor shop instructor have been accused of helping the inmates escape by smuggling them tools hidden inside hamburger meat.

    6:35 p.m.

New York’s U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer says a murderer who escaped from a maximum-security prison three weeks ago was tracked by dogs and was shot and killed by a federal border patrol agent from Vermont.

He says Richard Matt was killed Friday afternoon.

Schumer was briefed by U.S. Border Patrol and by the U.S. Marshals Service, which had placed Matt and fellow escapee David Sweat on its 15 Most Wanted fugitives list.

Sweat is still being sought. Police looking for Sweat are trucking floodlights into a heavily wooded area in Malone where they believe he’s hiding and where Matt was killed.

Schumer says searchers closed in on the pair after receiving a 911 call from a woman who overnight heard “an intruder” knock on her door. He says the woman called police, who brought in tracking dogs.

He says officers then found Matt and killed him.

A prison guard and a prison tailor shop instructor have been accused of helping the inmates escape.

    4:45 p.m.

One of two convicted killers who staged a brazen escape from an upstate New York maximum-security prison and had been hunted for three weeks has been shot and killed.

An official with knowledge of the manhunt says Richard Matt was killed and David Sweat is still on the run. The official wasn’t authorized to talk about the development publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on Friday on the condition of anonymity.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo (KWOH’-moh) says Matt and Sweat used power tools to saw through a steel cell wall and several steel steam pipes, bashed a hole through a 2-foot-thick brick wall, squirmed through pipes and escaped early on June 6 from Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, near the Canadian border.

Sweat was serving a sentence of life without parole in the killing of a sheriff’s deputy in Broome County in 2002. Matt was serving 25 years to life for the killing and dismembering of his former boss.

A prison guard and a prison tailor shop instructor have been accused of helping the inmates escape.

    4:30 p.m.

Police searching for two escaped inmates are converging on an area near the Canadian border where officers had concentrated their search, but the reason isn’t immediately clear.

There was no immediate word from state officials about the response Friday.

It comes as searchers on the trail of Richard Matt and David Sweat found new evidence left behind by the pair. The area police are converging on is south of Malone, about 30 miles west of Clinton Correctional Facility.

Hundreds of officers looking for Richard Matt and David Sweat shifted the focus of their search slightly northwest to woods and fields around Malone

    The pair escaped June 6.

    ___

    1:20 p.m.

Authorities say more evidence left behind by two escaped New York prisoners has been found in an area near the Canadian border where more than 1,100 law enforcement officers are concentrating their search.

State police Maj. Charles Guess says the items were found Thursday at a cabin and Friday morning in a field, both in the town of Malone, 30 miles northeast of the maximum-security prison David Sweat and Richard Matt broke out of June 6. Guess says the items have been sent to a forensic lab for testing.

He isn’t revealing details about the items but refers to them as “significant.”

Other evidence was found last weekend in a hunting cabin in the neighboring town of Bellmont.

Guess says the search effort is moving north toward the Canadian border.

    ___

    9:45 a.m.

Police are again shifting the focus of their search for two convicted murderers who escaped from a maximum-security prison in northern New York three weeks ago.

Hundreds of law enforcement officers have spent most of the past week concentrating on a heavily wooded area 20 miles west of Clinton Correctional Facility, where David Sweat and Richard Matt broke out June 6. Authorities say DNA evidence confirmed the fugitives had been inside a hunting camp near the hamlet of Mountain View.

By Friday morning, fewer officers were around the hamlet while others were searching a few miles north in the town of Malone, near the Canadian border.

A small contingent of New York state troopers is stationed along power lines in the town, and motorists have to pass through a checkpoint.

    ___

    9:15 a.m.

New York state prison officials say the corrections officer charged after the escape of two convicted murderers has been suspended without pay.

Gene Palmer’s suspension from his $72,644-a-year job comes after he was arrested Wednesday night on charges of promoting prison contraband, tampering with evidence and official misconduct.

Palmer has told investigators he provided paint, tools and prison catwalk access to Clinton Correctional Facility inmates Richard Matt and David Sweat, who escaped June 6. But the 57-year-old veteran guard says he had no idea they were planning to escape.

Before the charges came down, Palmer was suspended with pay from his job at the northern New York prison.

He is free on $25,000 bail.
