OK, got it. Good. Now here’s a quick preview of the games involving local teams:
GIRLS
No. 1 Port Allegany (21-0) vs. No. 8 Smethport (14-9)
These two teams played three times during the regular season, with none of the contests being particularly close. Smethport comes in red-hot however, winners of nine-straight, including an impressive 48-35 win over Brockway in the opening round Wednesday.
In that game, Morgan Okerlund went for 20 points and 15 rebounds, while Kiyah Taggart sparked a big second-half run with a four-point play.
Smethport will have to be at its best to stay competitive with the unbeaten Lady Gators, who have looked like a well-oiled machine for much of the season.
The inside duo of 1,000-point scorer Becca Lathrop and Brooke Roys, Port’s two leading scorers, have given teams fits all season. They combine to average28 points per game.
Couple that with the ultra-quick Krista Miller and point guard, the sharp-shooting Lynae Delacour and do-everything McKenna Johnson, and it’s easy to see why Port has been so good this season.
They have also gotten solid contributions off the bench from the likes of Somer Buchsenschutz, Shania Jones and Autumn Buchsenschutz.
No. 7 Keystone (16-7) vs. No. 2 Coudersport (19-3)
Keystone made quick work of Cameron County in the first round Wednesday, thanks in large part to a suffocating pressure defense led by Madison Johnson, one of the top players in the district.
Coudersport, meanwhile, enters with a record of 19-3, with its only losses being to Port Allegany (twice) and Bradford (20-2).
Jenna Gabreski leads the way for Coudy at 16.6 points per game, while Johnson averages 15.9 for Keystone.
It’s another KSAC-NTL matchup, with a trip to the state playoffs on the line.
No. 4 Clarion (17-6) vs. No. 5 Elk County Catholic (19-5)
These two teams are familiar with one another, having played in the EQT Energy Classic on Dec. 28, a 49-30 win by Clarion.
That was then, however, and this is now. The Lady Crusaders are fresh off an AML championship, and our led by the dynamic guard tandem of Julia Sweeney and Macy Neurieter.
Clarion, meanwhile, has quite the duo of their own in Kyla Miles (16.7 ppg.) and Maci Thornton (15.4 ppg.).
The winner will play the Port/Smethport winner in the semis.
BOYS
No. 3 Cameron County (20-2) vs. No. 6 Ridgway (17-6)
For those of you that don’t remember, these two teams met on Dec. 9, a game that saw Cameron County’s Dylan Clingan rise to the national spotlight after a three-quarter court shot gave the Red Raiders a 44-43 win.
If the rematch is anywhere near as exciting, we should be in for a treat.
Cameron County 6-7 forward Nate Sestina leads District 9 in scoring at 23.2, while Clingan checks in at 11.0
They will be facing a Ridgway team led by Jeremy Breier (16.8 ppg.) and Josh Roselli (11.6 ppg.).
The winner will play the winner of the Clarion-Limestone/DuBois Central Catholic-Union winner in the semis.
No. 4 Johnsonburg (21-3) vs. No. 5 Coudersport (17-5)
Johnsonburg may be the fourth-seeded team, but they are most people’s favorites to repeat as District 9 champions.
And who’s to argue, with the senior tandem of guards Cameron Grumley (21.7 ppg.) and Cole Peterson (20.7 ppg.) having another phenomenal year.
Coudersport doesn’t feature a big scorer, but plays a very solid team game, led by Ethan Hite, Alex Hershey, Andrew Rigas, Philip Andrus and Darren Keglovits.
They will have to be at their best to knock off the Rams.
No. 1 Elk County Catholic (21-3) vs. No. 9 Venango Catholic (12-11)
Elk County Catholic had won 16-straight games before its AML title game loss to Johnsonburg, and will take on perhaps the most interesting player in the tournament, VC’s Devin Zagar, in the quarterfinals.
Zagar, a legitimate 6-10 forward, averages 17.9 points per game.
Look for Elk County Catholic’s pressure defense to be a factor as they try and limit Zagar’s touches on offense.
For ECC offensively, they are primarily a perimeter scoring team. Their leading scorers are Cory Huff (16.2), Mitchell Struble (10.5) and Brandon Schlimm (9.4).
The winner will play either Johnsonburg or Coudersport in the semis.
