GIRLS BASKETBALL

With a 36-34 win over Coudersport, Port Allegany finished the first half of the North Tier League season unbeaten. What’s more, it was the first win for the Lady Gators over Coudy since 1999. Becca Lathrop’s 11 points led a Port squad that has now won 10 games in a row.

It’s been quite a run for Port Allegany sports in 2012-13. The boys soccer team enjoyed a terrific season, the volleyball team advanced to the PIAA playoffs and everyone knows about the historic accomplishments of the football team, which advanced to the PIAA semifinals before falling to Clairton.

Other schools in the North Tier League have enjoyed similar success in multiple sports in the past. It comes down to having several really good classes of athletes and good coaching — pretty simple. When you have those two things, success usually follows and its been neat to watch Port Allegany in all sports this school year.

In other girls action, Cameron County got 29 points from Brooke Dunsmore in its win over Oswayo Valley. She now has 55 points in her last two games for a rapidly improving Lady Red Raiders team and is putting herself in serious consideration for all-district honors.

Also, Northern Potter knocked off Semthport 37-29 and Otto-Eldred got 12 points from Ashley Brown in a 34-26 win over Austin.

First-year coach Heather Sheeler has done a nice job with the Otto program. Yes, they are only, 6-9, but they are also a very young team and, like Cameron County, are getting better each time out.

Wrestling

Smethport continued its unbeaten season with a 57-18 win over Oswayo Valley.

Coach Terry Schwab has a deep and talented squad that has a very good chance to run the table.

Also, Kane beat Bradford 60-23 in a tilt that featured just four matches becasue of forfeits. Its been a rough couple of years for the Bradford wrestling program and it doesn’t look like its getting any better.
