AIR TIME: Bradford is getting some air time on public radio.

Don Mackowski of Enola, Pa., dropped us an e-line Friday: “WITF
Radio ‘Smart Talk’ (a PBS station) had a live feed from their
reporter Scott Detrow embedded with our troops in Iraq. The feed
involved a soldier from Bradford named Steve Jones ordering a car
to stop or he would shoot. The car kept coming and it was very
tense until the car stopped.”

Yesterday, the National Public Radio station in State College
(WPSU) carried a story about municipalities’ struggle during the
economic downturn which included comments from several Bradford
residents, including Police Chief Mike Close.

FOR THE BIRDS: Karen Ferguson Nick’s cabin in the Smethport area
has become the first bona fide Audubon Bird Habitat in McKean
County.

Karen, a Camp Hill resident, thanks RTS for alerting her to the
Audubon’s At Home Bird Habitat program which had pointed out the
dearth of such places in McKean County.

“We own a cabin in the Smethport area and enjoy watching the
wildlife and providing natural habitat for our animal friends,”
Karen writes.

“With our Habitat sign we received a letter from Steven Saffler,
the Audubon at Home Coordinator for Audubon PA. He told us that we
are the first McKean County property to be listed. I would like to
encourage others to go online and apply, www.pa.audubon.org. It is a
wonderful way to support our wildlife and also a joy to participate
in this wonderful program.”

ANTIQUES: Richard Manning of Duke Center has been laid off a
couple months, and the extra time allowed him to go rooting about
his property – unearthing some pretty old things.

Three family items he found was a Mother of Pearl boot hook used
for spats, and old leather coin purse, and a fancy beaded purse.
His search also turned up an old lock, a 1916 Climax Lever. It was
in the garage hanging on a nail. Almost unbelievably, he found a
key that, once inserted, immediately popped the lock.

SEZ WHO?: A reporter passed along a tidbit about rainfall that,
for some reason, seems appropriate. Seattle, Wash., which has a
reputation for its rainfall, gets an annual 36 inches. Bradford?
Would you believe 42.85 inches? After this year, can anyone dispute
the number? Monday’s overnight storm alone put down nearly two
inches!
