HUNGRY BEAR: If you’re in the East Smethport area, be on the
lookout for a very hungry 400-pound bear.
That’s the word today from Alice Elliott who tells us the
creature managed to tip over her freezer, but didn’t get any
goodies.
Hey, just imagine how hungry you’d be if you’d been sleeping for
the past few months. A few Oreos just wouldn’t cut it!
ON PATROL: Jerry Kleisath of Preble, N.Y., remembers his time in
the school patrols:
“When I was in grade school at East Smethport and Farmers
Valley, I served as a patrol boy on the bus that we rode. Would
have to get off and on at every stop to assure safe passage for the
students. We marched in Washington, D.C., after eighth grade. Then
as a senior at Smethport and in the high school band, we were
invited to accompany the patrol boys to D.C. and marched again down
Pennsylvania Avenue. A couple of good experiences.”
DVDs4VETs: Want to help out the veterans and not even have to
part with any cash?
Laurance Baschkin, executive director of a program known as
DVDs4VETs, tells us about this effort whose goal is to get DVDs
donated to military veterans who, for whatever reason, cannot
easily obtain them on their own.
“In the past year, we have arranged for the donation of more
than 25,000 DVDs to various vet hospitals, centers and clinics.
“It is important for your readers to know that we do not ask for
financial assistance, only for the donation of DVDs to directly
benefit the recipients. As a number of community service groups and
high schools have participated, please also inform your readers
that for donations of 10 or more DVDs, donors are acknowledged on
our honor roll,” he said.
These movie DVDs may be sent to the program at 173 Halstead
Ave., Harrison, N.Y., 10528, or mailed to the nearest VA
facility.
Portable DVD players are also greatly appreciated.
This sounds like a great way for schools to help out our
vets.

The website not only offers information on this worthwhile
program, but is also a great link to other locations for veterans
of any military organization. It affords military and veterans
searches, military record information, bulletin boards, and reunion
information, to name a few.
