TOP PETS: You think your pet is the best, right? Here is your
chance to prove it! Our Newspapers in Education program, which uses
the daily newspaper as a teaching tool in the local schools, is
sponsoring a pet photo contest. Help a worthy cause and win
bragging rights for your animal. Entries are in the paper every
Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday through January.

MORE STORES: We still have many, many people writing us about
stores that once existed in Bradford. Although we are trying to
list only the names of stores that have not been mentioned, we must
admit our head is beginning to swirl.

More today:

Lola Schneider writes, “I don’t think my sister-in-law’s
businesses has been mentioned. She had Griffin’s on Main Street and
the Clothes Tree in East Bradford. My brother managed an A&P
store on Davis Street and, at one time, there was an A&P near
the Emery Hotel along with B&O News. Also, there was an A&P
on West Washington Street.”

Margaret Sutterlin of New Port Richey, Fla., writes: “Herbig’s
Bakery was great. They had the best hard rolls. I worked at
McDowell & McDowell Law Firm and we used to get them every
morning and eat them with our morning coffee break. Also, I
remember very fondly the Home Grocery in Custer City. I also worked
there when I was in high school.”

“I also remember the J.C. Penney Store. Can you remember the
cords that ran up and over the top of the ceiling? When you paid at
the register, your money and slip was put in the little box and
away it went on a system to the cashier upstairs and you had to
wait until the little box came back to your register with your
change and slip.”

Mark Everett of Palm Harbor, Fla.: “We used to buy our albums or
45s to listen on our record players at the B&O Record Shop at
the head of Main Street. A lot of those same songs could be heard
at the Jan Jam restaurant where kids would go for a burger or a
shake. The Jan Jam was along side of Veterans Square. On the other
side of the Square was the Blue Bird bus terminal. Up from the bus
terminal on was Marzucco’s Pizza Shop.”
