Six more players have committed to play in the 33rd annual Big
30 Don Raabe Charities Classic.
Added to the Pennsylvania rosters this week are Brandon Smith,
Matt Walters and Kyle Bond.
Smith, of Coudersport High School, is a 6-3, 255-pound guard on
offense and nose guard and end on the defensive side of the ball
for the Falcons.
He was on both the Olean (N.Y.) Times Herald Big 30 team and AML
All-star team his junior and senior years. He was also one of
Coudersport’s captains.
Smith says he wants to play in the Big 30 Game because “it is an
honor and my dad played in the game, too.”
His biggest thrill was “making it to the final four without
being ranked.”
Smith will study criminal justice in college.
His hobbies include football, wrestling, baseball, hunting and
fishing with the family and hanging out with friends. His favorite
team is the Buffalo Bills.
Walters, from Johnsonburg High School, is a 6-0, 280-pound
center and played nose guard and tackle on defense.
He is an honor roll student and was selected to the AML all-star
team for the 2005 football season.
When asked why he wanted to play in the Big 30 Game, Walters
replied, “It is a great honor and opportunity for a high school
student and athlete. Stopping undefeated teams was my biggest
thrill while playing football.”
He will major in accounting at Clarion University.
Walters loves golf, playing cards and weight lifting. The Green
Bay Packers is his favorite team while Brett Favre is his favorite
player.
Bond, of St. Marys Area High School, is a 6-4, 275-pound two-way
tackle for the Flying Dutch.
He was a DuBois Courier Express all-star, District 9 all-star,
won varsity letters in football three years, wrestling two years
and was St Marys’ defensive MVP and co-captain.
Bond says he wants to play in the Big 30 Game “to get experience
playing with some of the best players in the area and also to get
ready to play college ball.”
He says he gets a thrill from “just the excitement and intensity
of the sport. Playing on a Friday night under the lights in front
of fans is great.”
He will attend Slippery Rock University, majoring in explorative
studies.
Bond’s hobbies are camping, hanging out with friends, playing
PlayStation, riding four-wheelers and eating. The Pittsburgh
Steelers is his favorite team and his favorite player is Alan
Faneca.
The three New York additions include Tim Hewitt Jr., Joshua
Smith and Steve Fitzpatrick.
Hewitt, from Allegany-Limestone Central School, is a 5-11,
165-pound wide receiver and defensive back for the Gators.
He was MVP for the Cassadaga Valley game and was the defensive
player of the year in midget football.
Hewitt wants to play in the Big 30 Game because he says “it is
an honor to be chosen and I would love to play football one last
time.”
His biggest thrill occurred when he caught his first touchdown
pass.
He will continue his education at Alfred, majoring in auto
body.
Hewitt’s hobbies include football, basketball, baseball and
cars. His favorite team is the Miami Dolphins and Chris Chambers
his favorite player.
Smith, of Olean High School, is a 5-10, 225-pound lineman on
both sides of the ball for the Huskies.
An honor roll student, he also won the Kevin Whitehead award for
football.
Smith says, “Playing in the Big 30 Game is a special event and
it means a lot to me to be able to participate. It is an honor to
play in and represent my school and state.”
His biggest thrill while playing football is “simply just
playing as a team and winning with the team just makes it more
special.”
Smith will major in finance at Jamestown Community College.
He is a “big sports fan” and enjoys hanging out with his
friends. The New England Patriots is his favorite team and Randy
Moss his favorite player.
Fitzpatrick, from Ellicottville Central School, is a 6-1,
225-pound center and a defensive tackle.
He is playing in the Big 30 Game “to be able to play football
one more time with my friends and opponents I’m familiar with.”
His biggest thrill was “winning sectionals in 2004 and playing
at Ralph Wilson Stadium three years in a row.”
He has received a three-year ROTC scholarship and an Enchanted
Mountain scholarship to St. Bonaventure University where he will be
a political science major.
Golf is Fitzpatrick’s main hobby. The Buffalo Bills is his
favorite team and Marvin Harrison his favorite player.
This week’s additions bring the Classic rosters total to 72 – 36
players per team.
The game pits graduated seniors from New York against graduated
seniors from Pennsylvania.
This year’s game will be played at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 5 at
Bradford’s Parkway Field.
Press Day will be held at 1:30 p.m. May 21 at Pitt-Bradford.
