A man’s body was found in the Tunungwant Creek near Forman
Street at 4:33 p.m. Sunday.
Bradford businessman Greg Huber -ðowner of the Sports Cafe in
Union Square – told The Era that his son, Zachary Huber, 21, was
taking garbage out to the Dumpster behind the restaurant and
noticed the body down in the creek.
“He called me, and I called the police,” Huber said, adding he
thought the incident must have occurred about 4:30 p.m. He went on
to say the police seemed to immediately recognize the person, who
he described as a male in his mid-30s.
Bradford City Police said Sunday night they’re treating the
incident as an “accidental death,” but declined to release any
further information.
Bradford City Police Chief Roger Sager said Sunday night from
his home that “there was an adult male found deceased in the
(Tunungwant) Creek,” and the incident is still under
investigation.
Sager said police were “quite sure,” of who they found, but
still need to make a positive identification. He said there will be
a “complete investigation,” including an autopsy, explaining it was
protocol for an “unattended death.”
McKean County Coroner Mike Cahill said the body was that of a
38-year-old male. The official time of death was listed as 4:50
p.m. Sunday, he said.
Cahill also declined to release the identity of the deceased
Sunday night.
McKean County District Attorney John Pavlock said that while
every case is different, with this case, he expected the deceased’s
identity to be available “relatively soon.”
With an unattended death, Pavlock said, the police protocol is
to first notify the coroner and then the district attorney, which
could include the county detective as well.
He said his office is working with city police, the coroner’s
office and a Punxsutawney-based state “RNI Unit,” which he said is
specially trained in forensic evidence gathering.
“They graciously assist even though this is a city case because
they have that specialized training, and help smaller, local
departments with major incidents like this one,” Pavlock said of
the RNI Unit.
There was no further information at press time Sunday night.
