YESTERDAY: We thought this was pretty cool although, we must
admit, we slept through it…
An e-mailer tells us that on Wednesday at two minutes and three
seconds after 1 a.m., the time and date will be 01:02:03
04/05/06.
“That won’t ever happen again,” our e-mailer says.
GUY WILLEY: Kate Lenaway of Kane writes, “I was so pleased to
see the article about my grandfather, Guy Willey, in your
newspaper. To answer the gentleman’s questions: WKZA closed shortly
after my Grandpa Guy’s death in 1985 and its call letters were
passed to 106.9 in Jamestown a few years ago.”
“I am the oldest of his seven grandchildren at 21. As the eldest
daughter of WKZA personalities Captain Cafeteria and Molly Menu
(Jim and Beth Lenaway) I have grown up hearing stories about my
Grandpa Guy and his way with the radio.
“The countless stories I’ve heard – from playing the same polka
on different speeds three times in a row to making my dad get up
early to start things off at the station because he didn’t want to
– have always been favorite at bed time!
“I know he made his listeners feel like friends not strangers.
What is not known about my grandpa is that he was a pioneer in
radio for things like desegregating his station in the South before
it was popular, and bringing the current FM format to the Kane
area.
“We’re all very proud, to say the least. I’m sure I speak for my
Dad Jim, Uncle Dennis and Aunt Gabby when I say thank you for
bringing back fond memories.”
SPRING?: We pass this along on a wintry Wednesday:
Trudy Victory writes, “Just a note to let you know that we have
also seen the robins, red-winged blackbirds, and merganser ducks
for a while now. Last Friday evening (3/24) about 9:30 we saw a
bear in the driveway of a residence about five miles out of
Emporium on Routeð120 north towards St. Marys. Their outside light
gave us a good look at it.”
“This Friday evening coming to Emporium from St. Marys, we saw
evidence of peepers on the highway and stoppedðand heard them in
full song. Arriving home we received some leeks from some dear
friends of ours and they were all cleaned and ready to eat. We
really appreciate their thoughtfulness and thank them so much. Good
signs of spring.”
