A Maryland woman suffered severe injuries in a
car/tractor-trailer accident at 11:30 a.m. Saturday on U.S. Route
219 at Kennedy Springs, Lafayette Township.
According to Kane-based state police, a car driven by Jo Beth De
Windt, 57, of Rockville, Md., was northbound on Route 219, and a
tractor-trailer driven by Russell E. Smith, 53, of Milton, Vt., was
southbound on the same road.
The De Windt car crossed over into the southbound lane, police
said, and hit the side of the tractor-trailer, causing it to spin
into the guardrail on the west side of the road.
De Windt suffered severe injuries and was taken by emergency
medical helicopter from the scene to Erie County Medical Center in
Buffalo, N.Y., where a spokesperson said Sunday night she was
listed in critical condition.
A passenger in the De Windt vehicle, Rosella Marlene Taylor, 61,
of Arlington, Va., suffered minor injuries, police said, and was
taken by Bradford City ambulance to Bradford Regional Medical
Center, where she was treated and released.
Smith was not injured.
The accident is still under investigation, police said.
The Lafayette Township Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department
assisted at the scene.
There was disabling damage to the car and moderate damage to the
truck, police said.
