SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Pitt-Bradford used a 21-hit attack en route
to a 12-1 win over previously unbeaten John Carroll in the
Wittenberg University Tournament on Sunday.
John Callahan (3-for-6, double), Corey Smock (3-for-5, RBI
double), Ryan Snyder (4-for-5, 4 RBIs, two doubles), Shawn Manning
(2-for-5, two doubles, 2 RBIs), Justin Schoening (2-for-5, RBI) and
Geoff Brabham (4-for-5, two doubles, 3 RBIs) led the Panthers.
Tanner Bechtel was the mound winner. He pitched eight innings,
gave up six hits, whiffed five, walked three and gave up one run.
Jesse Yano pitched the ninth, striking out two.
“Pitching and defense were the name of the game this weekend,”
UPB coach Bret Butler said. “The pitching is starting to finally
come together. We definitely improved on our pitching from the
Arizona trip.
“Tanner pitched aggressively. He got ahead of the hitters and we
fielded the ball all day long. Our infield played great. Zach
Foster and Jim Colestro were a good tandem this weekend.
“We feel we have a pretty good ball club. It’s going to take
some time to get this puzzle together.”
John Carroll falls to 12-1.
On Saturday, the Panthers lost to Wittenberg 6-5, but rebounded
to beat Hiram 13-11 in 12 innings.
Nate Jones took the loss against Wittenberg. He struck out
six.
Manning (double), Brandon LaBrozzi (2-run double) and Colestro
(2-run double) led UPB.
Against Hiram, Tim Johnson lined a two-out, two-run double in
the top of the 12th to give UPB the win.
Callahan (2-for-5, RBI), Smock (2-for-5, 2 RBIs), Snyder
(2-for-5, solo home run, 3 RBIs) and Colestro (2-for-5, two
doubles, two RBIs) keyed the Panthers’ 11-hit attack.
The Panthers (7-5) host Oswego State on Thursday.
