Moving wall coming to Smethport

In conjunction with the visit of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial
Moving Wall June 1-5 in Smethport, The Era will be producing a
special commemorative edition.

To be published May 25, the edition will include stories on The
Wall itself and on local people who were killed in the Vietnam War
and whose names appear on The Wall.

It will also include schedules of events, background on special
guests and speakers, names of sponsors and volunteers, and the many
other facets of The Wall’s visit to Smethport.

Editors are also looking for interesting stories and photographs
which would be relevant to The Wall’s visit, such as accounts by or
about veterans who served in Vietnam.

Veterans are encouraged to suggest ideas for articles or submit
stories directly to the Smethport committee coordinating the visit.
Those interested should contact Pam Miller, editor-in-chief of the
project, directly at 887-5719 or by e-mail at
pburlingame@adelphia.net.

The deadline for inclusion of stories in the edition is March
31.

Along with editorial copy, space will be available for purchase
through The Era’s advertising department.

As always, local business, industry and organizations are
welcome to purchase commemorative advertising space.

In addition, advertising will be available to individuals who
wish to remember a loved one who served in Vietnam or other war.
Details will be provided later this week in The Era’s advertising
section.

Not only will the edition be included with the May 25 Era but
will be available for purchase during the time The Wall is on
display on the island in Hamlin Lake Park.

The Ride of Pride motorcycle cavalcade will escort The Wall to
Smethport on May 31. The Wall will be open to the public 24 hours a
day from June 1 until 4 p.m. June 5. There is no admission fee.

Trained volunteers will be on the site to help visitors locate
names of love ones inscribed on The Wall. Visitors are encouraged
to take rubbings of the names.

In addition, The Wall committee has planned a full schedule of
services and ceremonies during the visit with a number of special
guests, speakers and activities.

The visit by the Moving Wall is being hosted by Post 138 of the
American Legion and Post 2497 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
