Still time to order flowers for Daffodil Days

There are still a few days left to order ahead for the local
American Cancer Society’s Daffodil Days fundraiser Monday through
March 26.

All next week, those interested in purchasing the flowers or
this year’s commemorative vase or Boyds Bear can still get them at
one of several direct sales sites here in Bradford.

Organizers of the annual benefit started taking orders in
January for deliveries to be made next week all across McKean
County, according to McKean County ACS Income Development
Specialist Fran Stewart and project chairperson Lisa Boser.

The Boyds Bear plush toy that was available to accompany orders
last year is back again this year. The 2006 Boyds Bear is named
Flowers R. Hope, and features green eyes and a green and yellow
plaid ribbon around its neck.

The bear was used for the first time last year only in
Pennsylvania, where the Boyds Bears headquarters is located,
Stewart said. It was so popular, however, it is being used
nationally this year, she said.

Daffodil Days is in its 33rd year in Pennsylvania, Stewart said,
adding the state chapter has raised $30 million for the American
Cancer Society to date. The local chapter’s goal this year is
$21,500.

Both Stewart and Boser seemed confident the group would make its
goal, Stewart saying, “We’re going to go over it.”

“We really want to give people hope,” Boser said. “And it’s a
great way to welcome spring.”

Stewart said 3,600 bunches (there are 10 flowers in a bunch) of
daffodils have already been purchased. She said there has been such
an overwhelming participation in the event this year, that more
flower and bears had to be ordered already.

Boser attributed much of the group’s success to partnerships
with Bradford Regional Medical Center, the area’s major employers,
churches, nursing homes, schools and other public service
organizations.

Those interested in ordering flowers, a vase or the bear can
contact the local American Cancer Society office in Bradford.

Direct sales sites, where residents can purchase on the spot
next week, include Parkview, County National Bank (downtown),
National City Bank on Main Street, Northwest Savings Bank on East
Main Street, Hamlin Bank on East Main Street and BRMC. Northwest
Savings Bank

Volunteers will start preparing the deliveries Monday at City
Beers on West Washington Street; deliveries will start
Wednesday.

Also Wednesday, there will be a survivors’ reception in the
oncology department at BRMC from 1 to 3 p.m.
