THOSE TEAMS: Bradford High grad Barney Snyder has another
chapter in our saga on Bradford’s fabulous football squads:
“I read with great interest the comments by your many readers on
the various football teams of different eras. I graduated in 1952.
That year our team under Rock Denning as head coach for his first
time after the departure of Bob Pflug.
“We played all of the Erie Schools and usually won all but one
of those games. Those were Erie Strong, Erie Prep, Erie Tech and
one other. They had tough kids.
“Dibbie Milliron anchored our line and as a linebacker there was
not a better one in the entire state. Dibbie made all-district and
went to Villanova and Sam Valentine of DuBois made second team and
went to Penn State and had a very good career.
“I guess our BHS information department did not do a good job of
getting the word on Dibbie out because Valentine made all-state and
Dibbie, honorable mention. It never seemed to bother Dibbie who was
and still is one fine person.
“My brother-in-law, Tom Thamm graduated in the class of ’47 and
said he thought Don Frampton who won a scholarship to KY as a
quarterback was the best athlete to ever come out of BHS.
“Maybe the best quarterback, but not the best athlete. The best
athlete to come out of BHS up ’til when I graduated was Tom Keene,
class of ’50. Not even close.
“He got a scholarship to Penn State but had academic
difficulties and left school. Milt Plum of PA State and who Tom
would have competed with for starting QB went on to be a good
professional quarterback in the NFL.
“Tom was our best basketball player and eventually played
professional baseball. He was another ‘cool hand Luke’ type of guy.
He never got rattled.”
MEMORY QUIZ: Grace McAndrew Whitnah writes, “Hello, I have
wondered since moving away from Bradford over 20+ years ago about
the man who used to walk up and down by what was De Selles candies.
I can’t recall his name but I recall as a child watching him do
this. Who was he and what information do you have on him? Just
curious.”
