RTS for Friday

NOT NEW: Still more information, and a photograph, showing
there’s nothing new under the sun – at least not in Bradford.

We’re talking about those upside down Christmas trees. A real
beauty adorned Glendorn some years ago, and here’s a photo to prove
it.

John C. Dorn, who now resides in Midland, Texas, tells us more:
“I can’t remember what year, but most likely during the ’50s. Why
was it done? It was done because Arthur liked to do odd ball
things.”

(Arthur was the butler, Arthur Hazel.)

Mr. Dorn continues, “One year we had a revolving Christmas tree,
one year he strung popcorn from the ceiling in the big room on
2-inch squares covering the entire living room and with string hung
to just below the rafters. A virtual snowstorm!

“He did a Christmas tree at the Roost where the Christmas lights
on the tree had vented light shades so that the heat from the bulb
would spin the shade.

“In his own house, the present Orvis shop, he had striped wall
paper, but instead of being vertical, he did it horizontally.
Arthur was different and very imaginative. He retired in 1965
having promised to do Hanley’s wedding.”

Our thanks to Daniel J. Abrashoff, general manager of Glendorn,
for collecting this information for us.

We are not yet done with our upside-down tree stories so look
for another installment in coming days.
