    HS Basketball: Port A girls earn 1st win

    PORT ALLEGANY — Bree Garzel continued her strong start to the season as Port Allegany notched its first victory, a 52-29 decision against visiting Smethport.

    Garzel, who scored 31 points in the Lady Gators’ season opener against Elk Catholic, poured in 24 points on Monday and added six assists, five rebounds and five steals to lead Port (1-1) to its first win.

    Jade Evens scored 12 points, secured five boards and blocked two shots for the Lady Gators, while Brielle Budd (6 points) had seven rebounds.

    Smethport (0-5) was paced by Sabrina Tanner’s nine points. Corin McClain (2 points) grabbed six rebounds, while Abby Lutz scored seven points and dished out four assists.

    Elk Catholic 49, Cameron County 31

    ST. MARYS — Julia Aikens scored 17 points to power Elk Catholic to a home win.

    Sydney Alexander (11 points) and Tori Newton (10 points) were also in double figures for ECC (5-0).

    Cameron County (2-2) was paced by Hailey Hilfiger’s nine points and Kaelee Bresslin’s eight points.

    ECC led by two at halftime before taking a 42-30 lead into the fourth quarter. From there, the Lady Crusaders held Cameron County to just one point the rest of the way.

    EMPORIUM — Three different Red Raiders scored in double figures as Cameron County picked up its third straight win.

    Caden Beldin led Cameron County (4-1) with 16 points. Hayden Brown scored 12 points, and Gavin Morton chipped in 11.

    The Red Raiders led 14-10 after the first quarter and 23-18 at halftime before turning in a big third quarter to take a 14-point advantage into the fourth.

    Austin (0-1) picked up 13 points from Jacob Hooftallen, who connected on three treys. Jackson Glover added 12 points for the Panthers.

    SHINGLEHOUSE — Elk Catholic grabbed an 18-point lead after the first quarter and never looked back in a big win over Oswayo Valley.

    Three Crusaders (5-1) finished in double figures. Mason McAllister paced ECC With 14 points, while Luke Jansen scored 13 and Mark Kraus added 10.

    Oswayo Valley (0-4) connected on six shots from three-point range as a team. Carter Stedman hit four of those for his 12 points, while Cayden Black hit two en route to 10 points.
