First Response

Richard Obermeyer

Name: Richard Obermeyer

Title/Position: Patrolman

Agency: City of Bradford Police Department

Length of time in position: 4.5 years

What made you decide to become a first responder?

Like many kids graduating high school, I did not know what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I went on a campus visit to Pitt-Bradford and spoke with a professor about a career in law enforcement. I ended up getting my undergrad degree in criminal justice and I knew that I did not want to work inside in an office all day so naturally I looked into working in law enforcement. Now my daily office has four wheels and an engine.

Who is your favorite superhero or super villain and why?

Batman, He is the only superhero who does not have any superpowers and everything that he does is done with tools and gadgets.

What is your favorite part of the job?

My favorite part of the job is the cliche “getting to help people”. It is very humbling to know that when an individual is having one of the worst moments of their life that we are the ones who get called to show up and do everything that we can to help. Also getting to drive with lights and sirens brings out the little kid inside me.

Tell us about your family and/or pets.

I was born and raised in Bradford, PA and I currently live here with my fiance Kelsey and our dog Puck.

What is one thing you want the community to know about what you do?

We are here 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, ready to respond at a moments notice to assist the public with whatever emergency that they have. Being a first responder is one of the few professions that does not get holidays and every weekend off. You end up becoming very good friends with a lot of people in this profession like firemen, hospital staff, tow truck drivers, and other first responders. They essentially become your second family.
