Name: Nate Mealy

Title/Position: Firefighter/Paramedic

Agency: Bradford City Fire Department

Length of time in position: 7 Years

What made you decide to become a first responder?

My decision to become a first responder was born from witnessing an accident with multiple victims and not knowing what to do, nor how to help. I disliked that helpless feeling to the point of not finding myself there again. I was determined I would at least know what to do. That spurred me to begin my training in emergency services, nearly 20 years ago now.

Who is your favorite superhero or super villain and why?

Honestly, I have never really been interested in superheroes. The everyday heroes have always intrigued me. The ones who do the seemingly impossible, without superhuman powers.

What is your favorite part of the job?

The unknown. Any day anything can (and often does) happen. There is very little about this job that is routine.

So many second grade kids when they are asked for the yearbook “What do you want to be when you grow up?” they answer “A Fireman!” and I get to live that dream every day.

Tell us about your family and/or pets.

My wife, Donya and my two daughters, Hattie, 9, and Tessla, 5, are such strong supporters of me. They deal well with the unpredictable lifestyle of a responder, the long hours, and call outs quite well. They are always happy to see me when I get home and equally understanding if I have to turn around and leave again. I would not have this career without that.

What is one thing you want the community to know about what you do?

To a man, we love what we do and we are honored to have the trust and support of the community behind us.
