Owls drop extra-inning heartbreaker; O-E takes doubleheader from Smethport

DUBOIS — For the second time this season, the Bradford baseball team’s early lead slipped away, this time coming with an eight-inning 3-2 loss to DuBois.

Through the first three frames, neither team could find anything to build off of. Each, at best, could send four batters to the plate before the third out. That changed, however, when the Owls would get on the scoreboard first with a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice-fly from Talan Reese, scoring Matthew Perry. The Beavers would retaliate with one of their own in the bottom of the fourth before tying the game in the seventh off an Owl error.

Going into extra innings, Bradford couldn’t muster any more momentum, instead witnessing DuBois load the bases and steal the victory with a walk-off RBI single.

Bradford’s Liam Haven went 2-for-3 at the plate, scoring once.

CLARION — The Crusaders came close but just couldn’t surpass the defending Class A state champion Bobcats.

While ECC was struggling to get past Clarion’s ace, Tanner Miller, who ended with seven strikeouts in three innings on the mound, the Bobcats got to work. The Bobcat’s first five batters all found hits as they managed to pour in three runs, starting a five run first that would snowball into seven runs in three innings.

ECC’s biggest push came in the fifth. With the bases loaded, three consecutive Bobcat errors allowed four Crusaders to round home plate.

Matthew Gilmore led ECC in the batter’s box, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one more batted in. Frankie Smith went 2-for-4 as well with two runs.

Luke Zimmerman led the offensive charge for Johnsonburg, clearing the bases with a three-run double in the inning. Derek Beimel also had an RBI single and Isaiah Jackson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Beimel tossed five strong innings to get the win, allowing just one run on five hits, striking out four and walking six. Zimmerman tossed two hitless innings of relief, striking out three and walking one. Jesse Siwiecki had the lone RBI for C-L. Logan Lutz took the loss, allowing three runs in 4 1/3 innings, allowing two hits, striking out eight and walking four.

ELDRED — Otto-Eldred picked up a doubleheader sweep over Smethport.

The Terrors’ picked up their third win of the season behind Zach Schuessler’s near-perfect work on the mound in Game 1.

Through 20 batters faced, Schuessler fanned 11 of them, only allowing four hits throughout the day. His work set the foundation for O-E’s work at the plate, which scored in all but one frame.

Jaden Prince had the best day in the batter’s box for the Terrors, going 2-for-4 with two runs and one more batted in. Manning Splain and Sean McGee both had two runs and one RBI as well, hitting 1-for-3, respectively.

For the Hubbers, Colin Riekofsky went perfect at the plate, hitting 2-for-2 and tallying one RBI.

Otto-Eldred scored five runs in the second inning and two in the fifth to earn the Game 2 win.

Splain was 2-for-5 with two RBIs, while Prince also drove in two runs and Andrew Schenfield had two hits.

Jared Obenrader got the win, scattering 10 hits over six innings and allowing five runs (four earned), striking out seven and walking three.
