EMPORIUM — UPMC Cole is proud to announce that Shivraj Goyal, M.D. has recently earned diplomate board certification through the American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM). Certification as an ABOM diplomate signifies specialized knowledge in the practice of obesity medicine and distinguishes a physician as having achieved competency in obesity care.
“Obesity is a global pandemic and it not only affects physical health but also mental health,” said Goyal. “The CDC reports that 42 percent, almost half, of U.S. citizens are obese based on their body mass index (BMI). New science has emerged that shows obesity is not only related to diet and physical activity, but to other complex factors. The introduction of new medicines for obesity have opened a new horizon. This certification allows me to better aim at accomplishing each patients’ goals of healthy living and weight loss together as we take on the challenge as a team.”
Obesity care, also known as bariatric medicine, requires a competent and thorough understanding of the genetic, biological, environmental, social, and behavioral factors that contribute to obesity. Physicians specializing in bariatric medicine utilize a comprehensive approach and therapeutic interventions including diet, physical activity, behavioral change, and pharmacotherapy to achieve optimal results.
