Steele not guilty of most serious offense in alleged battery case

RIDGWAY — A Brockport man has been found not guilty of the most serious charge against him at his Elk County trial on domestic battery counts Thursday, online court records show.

Robert Steele Sr., 32, was found guilty of misdemeanor simple assault and summary counts of harassment and various traffic offenses in the one-day jury trial.

But jurors returned a not guilty verdict on the more serious felony aggravated assault count against him.

The charges stem from a March 30 domestic dispute and manhunt that began at 116 Cross Road in Horton Township and ended with Steele attempting to slit his writs during a police pursuit, officials said.

Steele’s 26-year-old girlfriend was listed as the victim and said to have suffered missing teeth and facial fractures as a result of being struck by Steele with closed fists, police said.

Steele is said to have also led responding officers on an off-road pursuit before being taken into custody, at which time officers reported discovering he had cut himself with a sharp object, resulting in serious injuries.

He was taken to an area hospital for treatment, as was his girlfriend who officials said also took an intentional overdose of pain relievers after the incident.

The defense was presented at trial by attorney Michael Marshall of DuBois and the prosecution by Elk County district attorney Shawn T. McMahon.

Sentencing of Steele has yet to be scheduled.
