    Sinnemahoning to host annual snake hunt

    SINNEMAHONING — The annual Sinnemahoning Sportsmen’s Association Snake Hunt is scheduled for June 14-15 at the club grounds in Sinnemahoning. 

    The event is organized by the Keystone Reptile Club and is educational and exciting for the entire family. 

    Organizers said a number of vendors will be on site and camping spots are also available for the event.

    On June 14 at 7 a.m., snake hunt registration will be at the pit area. At 10 a.m., the Kid’s Pit will have hands-on training where all ages are welcome to come in and handle any non-venomous snake. There will be a question and answer session for children as well with sessions at 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.

    Organizers said there will be a chicken barbecue at 1 p.m., and all snakes must be turned in by 5 p.m. to be eligible for Saturday trophies. Trophies will be awarded at 6 p.m. for the following categories: Heaviest yellow phase timber, heaviest black phase timber, heaviest copperhead and heaviest non-venomous. The first yellow phase timber and first black phase timber turned in will receive a prize. DJ Dick will perform from 8 to 11 p.m.

    Meanwhile, on June 15, the pit opens at 7 a.m. At 10 a.m., the Kid’s Pit will have hands-on training where all ages are welcome to come in and handle any non-venomous snake. There will be a question and answer session for the children as well with sessions at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. There will be a chicken barbecue at noon, and at 2 p.m. all snakes must be turned in to the pit.

    Trophies will be awarded for the overall hunt at 3 p.m. with the categories: Longest rattlesnake, second longest rattlesnake, most rattlers, longest copperhead, second longest copperhead and longest snake in the hunt. This will be followed by the cash prize giveaway. Tickets are available at the event for the cash giveaway at $1 per ticket.

    Organizers said the event will go on rain or shine. Food and refreshments will be available on both days. Carry-in food and beverages are prohibited and there are no pets allowed. Snake hunt shirts, hats and membership to the Sinnemahoning Sportsmen’s Association will be available at the event. There is no admission.
