NICK’S: We had a couple of people call on Wednesday to let us know we gave the wrong location for Nick’s Red Hots in that day’s column.
Reader Linda McGee explained that when it moved from Main Street to Veterans Square, it was not where the barber shop is now. She said it was in the spot that is now the parking lot behind the former Elk’s Lodge.
This was the lodge on Veterans Square, not the one on Chestnut Street.
Linda said Nick’s moved again to South Bradford, too.
Clayton Vecellio of Lewis Run agreed Nick’s had sat where the parking lot now exists. He noted Nick’s was underneath a bowling alley when it was on the square.
FAVORITES: Russell Lombardo of Santa Barbara, Calif., was also inspired to contact us after reading Wednesday’s column.
He wrote, “I was reminded of a post I put on Facebook that got lots of comments on my favorite restaurants I remembered from my time in Bradford.” His list is below.
Favorite foods/restaurants from Bradford (and surrounding area) (1965 to 1980):
1. Congress Street Diner, Bradford – hamburger and french fries
2. Downbeat, Bradford – Friday night fish fry and hot meatball sandwich on Guy Colella Italian bread
3. Jan Jam, Bradford – pizza and hamburgers after school
4. Ma Pete’s, Bradford – hot dogs with her special sauce
5. Nick’s Red Hot, Bradford – hot dogs with his special sauce
6. Twin Drive Inn, Lewis Run – steak sandwiches
7. The Castle, Allegany, N.Y. – surf and turf and spaghetti with meatball dinners
8. Roxy’s, Olean, N.Y. – great thin crust pizza
9. Festa Italiana, Bradford – meatballs sandwiches, rigatoni, and pizza
10. Roman Villa (was the Glass Bar) – now Pitt-Bradford
Several of these places have appeared in our recent columns about stores and restaurants that used to be in the area. Does anyone have good stories about the other places?
