Due to economic and business circumstances, RecycALL of Port Allegany has decided to close it’s pallet manufacturing operation.
Business Manager Penny Birosh told The Era on Tuesday that operations ceased as of May 13, resulting in three employees being laid off.
The facility, located at 4832 Route 155 in Port Allegany, began manufacturing pallets from local hardwoods on Oct. 22, 2008, according to Birosh.
The owners plan to offset the closure with a new tenant or operation within the next several months. Co-owner Wayne Shelley said they are considering any and all opportunities to repurpose the facility that housed their pallet operation.
The facility consists of a relatively new 14,000-square-foot steel clear-span building that is insulated and heated, according to Shelley. He noted it has three loading docks, a ground-level drive-in entrance, lunchroom and bathrooms.
Shelley said the glass recycling business, which employees 15 to 20 people, will continue to operate as it has for 18 years.
“Recycling glass is important because it conserves energy and reduces natural resource consumption by the glass manufacturers,” Birosh said, explaining glass from food and beverage containers is infinitely recyclable when properly collected and processed. “It also keeps the glass out of the landfills. Glass can be manufactured with as much as 70 percent recycled material.”
