PHILADELPHIA (TNS) — Police officers shot a man during a gun battle Friday in north Philadelphia who they believe killed a FedEx worker at a distribution center near Philadelphia International Airport, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
No police officers were injured during the event, the Inquirer said.
Police reported they were being shot at in the area of 10th and Westmoreland Streets around 5:45 p.m. The suspect was described as an “active shooter,” with officers saying they were under fire.
At least one officer shot the man, the news site said, who was then transported to a hospital, where he remains in stable condition.
No one else was reported as shot or injured, although several vehicles along 10th Street were struck by bullets.
Police in Tinicum Township said that the unnamed suspect, who is described as being 59 years old, believed to have fatally shot a FedEx worker around 2 p.m. Friday at a FedEx distribution center near the airport.
Police said they found the victim, Bart Masciulli, 51, of Levittown, fatally wounded inside a car after respoinding to that shooting scene. Witnesses told police the shooter walked up to the driver’s side window and fired repeatedly, the Inquirer said.
Masciulli had been working with FedEx for 28 years, police said. It is not yet know if the suspect was a co-worker, the Inquirer reported.
“We are shocked and saddened by this senseless act of violence. Our heartfelt thoughts are with the victim and all those affected by this tragic event,” FedEx said in a statement. “We are fully cooperating with the investigating authorities. Please refer any additional questions at this time to local law enforcement.”
