OLEAN, N.Y. — As of Thursday afternoon, police were looking for a man who allegedly attempted to pick up teenage girls leaving Olean High School after dismissal.
Olean City Police Department Capt. Robert Blovsky reported Thursday investigators have confirmed three separate cases of a balding white male in his mid- to late 30s, driving a red or maroon SUV, suspiciously approaching girls. Blovsky said in each of the confirmed cases, which occurred Tuesday afternoon, the male asked, “Where is a good place to eat?” and urged the girls to accompany him.
The girls declined, he said.
The reported interactions occurred on South 14th Street, West Sullivan Street by the Eagles Club, Main Street by Olean General Hospital and North Fourth Street near the high school, Blovsky said.
One girl reportedly encountered the man a second time, just minutes after the first exchange, he added.
“He asked her where a good place to eat was. She declined also,” Blovsky said. “Within minutes, she was walking down near the hospital on Main Street … and she saw him go by and called the police at that point.”
He said the red SUV, likely a Dodge Durango or Ford Explorer, might be a newer model. The male also has been described with blue eyes, he added.
“We’re just finding out more people are calling in,” Blovsky said. “We sent out a message through the school (Thursday) to tell people we were looking for a suspicious vehicle. We’ve had no reports since then. Tuesday was the only day we had any activity.”
Blovsky noted, however, the man hadn’t done anything illegal that investigators were aware of.
“He’s just really suspicious, and we’d like to talk to him,” he said.
