OIL CITY (TNS) — The search for a missing Oil City woman turned into a homicide investigation after her body was found along a bike trail, according to reports from WTAE and Erie News Now.
The discovery happened the morning of March 27, when authorities from the police department, state police, and the Venango County District Attorney’s Office reported to the Oil City bike trail. The woman’s body was found near a stretch of the trail off Osborne Street, across the road from Clarion University’s Venango campus, according to reports.
An investigation at the scene did not uncover the manner and cause of death. After an autopsy, the investigation into the woman’s death was upgraded to a homicide, according to reports.
The deceased woman has been identified as Marcy Suzette Nellis, who would often go by Suzette. She was last seen at 3:30 p.m. Sunday near the Clarion University Venango Campus when she went out for a walk, Erie News Now reported.
A firefighter’s union said the first 12 hours of the search involved more than 100 trained personnel, a search and rescue team, a helicopter, drones with night vision, search dogs, and boats, according to WTAE.
A friend of Nellis said she was the first to welcome her to the area and was always kind.
“Every time we would go on walks, she would stop us just to say hello, to be friendly. Just a wonderful person. This is such a terrible way for her to leave,” the friend said to WTAE.
According to officials, no further information will be released regarding the cause and manner of death, nor has a suspect been placed in custody.
Additionally, the investigation into the incident will remain ongoing by the Pennsylvania State Police, Oil City police, and the county DA’s office.
