ST. MARYS — The City of St. Marys Police Department arrested a St. Marys man following an undercover operation where firearms changed hands.
According to a report from St. Marys police, George Cheatle, 42, of St. Marys was arrested after an undercover operation concluded in November 2021. During that operation, police say members of the Task Force purchased three handguns and one AR-15 style rifle from Cheatle. These firearms were allegedly stolen from the rightful owner. Also, Cheatle is not permitted to possess firearms due to a prior felony conviction, according to police.
Police reports said Cheatle originally offered to trade the firearms for crystal methamphetamine, but he later agreed to take $800 for them.
Cheatle appeared before the Magisterial District Judge and was arraigned on felony charges and placed on unsecured bail. Due to the unsecured bail, Cheatle was released from custody, according to police. His next appearance in court is set for March 22.
