Escaped FCI McKean inmate apprehended, faces new charges
An inmate who escaped from the minimum-security satellite camp at the Federal Correctional Institution McKean on Thursday was apprehended Friday morning after two men working in a wooded area off Route 321 recognized and detained him.
McKean County District Attorney Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer said Lashawn L. White, 52, was taken into custody without incident Oct. 30 and faces new felony charges.
White was discovered missing from the prison’s unsecured satellite camp at approximately 5 p.m. Oct. 29, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
Prison staff and Pennsylvania State Police searched the area with assistance from a police dog and helicopter but were unable to locate him.
Early Friday, two men working in a wooded area off Route 321 contacted state police after recognizing White. They detained him until law enforcement arrived.
White is also accused of breaking the glass of an excavator at the men’s work site Thursday evening.
Cpl. Joshua Bauer of Pennsylvania State Police at Lewis Run charged White with felony counts of escape and flight to avoid apprehension, along with misdemeanor criminal mischief.
White was returned to federal custody and is scheduled to appear in central court on the new charges.
At the time of his escape, White was serving a 108-month federal prison sentence imposed in the Southern District of Ohio for possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and heroin and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.
Following his disappearance, the U.S. Marshals Service, FBI and other law enforcement agencies were notified, and an internal investigation was initiated.
The minimum-security satellite camp is adjacent to FCI McKean but separate from the prison’s secured, fenced-in facility.
