Kane Historic Preservation Society (KHPS) has received a $50,000 grant from the West Penn Energy Fund and $50,000 from The Collins Companies Foundation to install solar panels on the roof of the Kane Depot. The project is scheduled to begin in mid-October. KHPS is a volunteer-managed nonprofit responsible for preserving and operating two of Kane’s historic properties: the Kane Depot and the Kane Memorial Chapel. The buildings are one block apart in uptown Kane, near the intersection of Route 66 and Route 6. Formed 31 years ago, KHPS receives no government funding. Its volunteer board relies on fundraising and donations to support its work. In 2024, with support from the West Penn Energy Fund, KHPS completed an energy audit of both buildings. The fund subsequently paid for the recommended energy-efficiency improvements, which were completed in 2025. Those improvements have resulted in an estimated 15% reduction in natural gas use. The Kane Depot Solar Project is expected to substantially reduce or eliminate electricity costs in KHPS’s operating budget. Richard Bly, chairman of the historic society, said, “This potential savings will allow us to invest more in displays and benefit the visitor experience at the depot.” The project calls for a 24.64-kilowatt rooftop solar system on the depot’s south-facing roof. Designed by Envinity Inc., the system is expected to generate approximately 27,910 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. KHPS estimates that would offset about 111% of the combined annual electricity use of the depot and chapel, with excess power delivered to the West Penn Power grid under a net-metering agreement. KHPS said the project will stabilize long-term operating costs, allowing it to direct more resources toward preservation, education and community programming. The society also sees the project as an example of how a historic building can accommodate modern energy technology while retaining its architectural and historical character. The West Penn Energy Fund is a nonprofit that supports sustainable energy projects in the West Penn Power service region. Its funding priorities include energy technology, efficiency and conservation, as well as projects related to economic development, environmental improvements and public education. The Collins Companies Foundation supports charitable and educational programs in communities where Collins-owned companies do business. The family-held company, founded in 1855, has operated in Kane for more than 50 years through Kane Hardwood. The foundation has funded other KHPS projects over the years. Collins describes environmental stewardship as part of its work to provide sustainable products, respond to climate impacts and support long-term growth. “We are so fortunate to have the Collins family heavily invested in our community and interested in local history and sustainable energy,” Bly said.
