Philip F. Jacobus

KINGSTON, N.Y. — Philip F. Jacobus, 72, a native of Kane, Pa., and founder and CEO of DOTmed.com and publisher of HealthCare Business News, died Sunday, Aug. 23, 2026, as the result of head-on car crash caused when an oncoming vehicle swerved into his lane in Ulster County.

Jacobus was born and raised in Kane, where he often returned to visit with friends and relatives. He graduated from Kane High School in 1972 and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree at the University of Pittsburgh.

After moving to New York City, he went to China with his first foray into medical equipment technology, heading the China Business Development Group (CBDG) and selling to China its first MRI system. He later developed business dealings around the world, including Russia, where he similarly helped build its first proton therapy system in St. Petersburg through his investment company, Owen Kane Holdings.

By that time he’d built a new company in a pioneering realm, where business done online and in the real world meshed seamlessly — this was DOTmed.com at the turn of the 21st century. He and a colleague devised the name — but what isn’t known about that name is that Jacobus’ mother had passed away shortly before the company was born. Her name was Dorothy, but people knew her as “Dot” — so DOTmed was also meant to honor her memory.

Jacobus enjoyed traveling, cooking and gardening. Italy, the land of his family’s historic origin, was particularly close to his heart. In recent years he enjoyed traveling there with the love of his life, his wife of 37 years, Barbara Fahringer, as well as to India and Egypt, where he was both immersed in history, one of his fondest interests, and his other great delight, learning about cultures and meeting people.

He is predeceased by his father, Philip Francis Jacobus; his mother, Dorothy Jacobus; and an infant sister, Bettina. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; his sister, Katharyne “Kitty” Jacobus-Ryan; and his brother, Henry “Hank” Jacobus; as well as many close relatives, lifelong friends, his beloved associates of many years at DOTmed, and friends and allies he made in his adventurous journey through life.

Joseph V. Leahy Funeral Home of Kingston was in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the scholarship in Jacobus’ name through the Community Foundation of the Northern Alleghenies (CFNA), parent organization of the McKean County Community Foundation (MCCF).
