‘Round the Square: From regional to just quirky festivals

FESTIVALS: Pennsylvania’s summer festival season leans into the quirky and unmistakably regional, offering families plenty of drivable, budget‑friendly ways to get out of town without the cost of long‑distance travel. From glowing fireflies in the Allegheny National Forest to a nationally recognized pickle celebration in Pittsburgh, the state’s warm‑weather calendar is packed with events that double as easy weekend getaways.

The Edwardsville Pierogi Festival returns June 12 to 13 with food vendors, rides, games, live entertainment, and the annual Pierogi Cookoff and Pierogi Parade at John Hopkins Park. In Chester County, the Balloon Festival lifts off June 19 to 21 at Ludwig’s Corner Horse Show Grounds, where visitors can catch morning and evening launches, explore the Kids Zone and purchase tethered rides.

Fireflies take center stage June 26 to 27 in Tionesta, where the Pennsylvania Firefly Festival coincides with the peak mating displays of more than a dozen species, including the synchronous firefly. Phoenixville’s Colonial Theatre hosts Blobfest July 10 to 12, celebrating the 1958 Steve McQueen classic with screenings, themed events and the annual run‑out.

Pittsburgh’s Picklesburgh, set for July 16 to 19, brings pickle‑themed food, drinks, contests and merchandise downtown. In Westmoreland County, the Kecksburg UFO Festival runs July 22 to 24 with carnival food, a parade and nods to the 1965 UFO incident that inspired the event.

Bethlehem’s Musikfest, July 31 to Aug. 9, remains the nation’s largest free music festival, drawing nearly a million visitors for hundreds of performances. And in Centre Hall, the Grange Fair returns Aug. 21 to 29, continuing its 152‑year tradition as the country’s last remaining tenting fair.
