‘Round the Square: Find a hobby
HOBBIES: Do you have any hobbies?
In today’s world, where people work long hours and come home to rush out to their kid’s games, practices or activities, do folks remember to take time to keep their own minds entertained? We’re not talking about television, social media or “doomscrolling” on the internet.
Remember during the pandemic when people were learning new skills, or finding a way to do something they enjoy and make a bit of money, too?
Ideally, you could find three hobbies you love, one to earn money, one to stay in shape and one that allows you to free your creativity.
We’ve got the Allegheny National Forest right next to us, along with the Tuna Valley Trail Association, Kinzua Valley Trail Club and Mount Jewett to Kinzua Bridge trail systems. Hiking or biking might be fun ways to enjoy the outdoors. Geocaching, too, is popular with outdoor adventurers. Camping — or glamping — is widely available too.
There are plenty of waterways, including rivers and even the Great Lakes, within a reasonable drive. Maybe try kayaking, rafting or sailing.
Are you looking for something more along the lines of traditional art? Calligraphy, coloring, drawing, painting and photography are all popular. Often classes are offered at local libraries or businesses. There are many talented photographers in the community, and photography clubs, too. It can be an expensive hobby, so do some research before committing to it.
Are you interested in trying your hand at acting? There are community theaters who would love to have you join up. Maybe you don’t want to be on stage, but want to be on the front lines — backstage help is welcome, too.
Take a look around in the community. Most hobbyists would be happy to share their knowledge to enrich another person’s life.
