Russell Swanson

KANE — Russell L. Swanson, 82, of Anderson Street in Mount Jewett, passed away Friday (May 1, 2026) at Penn Highlands DuBois.

He was born Oct. 7, 1943, in Kane, the son of the late Victor and Virginia Reinard Swanson. He married Janice Christenson, who survives, on July 11, 1964 in the Nebo Chapel in MountJewett.

Russ worked at the Allegheny Particle Board plant and also Glenn O Hawbaker Inc.  He was the devoted caretaker of Nebo Chapel Cemetery and the superintendent of Bridgeview Cemetery at the time of his passing and for the previous 20 years.

He was a member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church, the Mount Jewett Sportsman Club, the Mount Jewett Veteran’s Memorial Club, the Wilcox Sportsman Club and the Owls Club.

Russ enjoyed hunting, puzzles and spending time with his family. His greatest joy was being a Bumpa to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Paula (Bob) Maga of McDonald; two sons, Jeffrey (Missy) Swanson of Mount Jewett and Daniel (Susan) Swanson of Beaver Falls; grandchildren, Austin (Kaelyn) Swanson of Ridgway, Ashley (Max) Countouris of Mountain Top, Nathan (Shae) Swanson of Pittsburgh and Tori and Danielle Swanson, both of Beaver Falls; great-grandchildren, Wrenlee Swanson and Niko Countouris; and numerous nieces and nephews

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, E. Jeanette Roth and Shirley Barnes Francis; a brother-in-law, John Paul Christenson; and a niece.

Visitation was held Sunday (May 3, 2026) at Cummings Funeral Home. A funeral service was conducted Monday (May 4, 2026) at Nebo Chapel in Mount Jewett, with the Rev. Carol Sharp officiating.  Burial followed in Nebo Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Mount Jewett Sportsman Club or Nebo Cemetery.
