Duane Gregg

PORT ALLEGANY — Duane E. Gregg of Port Allegany passed away Thursday (April 23, 2026) at Buffalo (N.Y.) General Hospital, surrounded by his family after a lengthy illness, which he had endured with dignity, strength and unending optimism.

Born in Port Allegany on July 23, 1943, he was a son of Bert O. Gregg and Winifred June Gregg.

Duane was a 1961 graduate of Port Allegany High School, where he enjoyed and did well in sports. In 1965, he graduated from Penn State University where he later did graduate work. In 1965, he married Mary Lena Michelitsch, a fellow student at Port Allegany High School and Penn State, who survives. In August 2025 they celebrated 60 years of marriage.

Duane and Mary taught for two years in Blossburg before returning to their alma mater where he taught mathematics until his retirement in 1995. While in Blossburg, Duane served as assistant football coach and as coach of the girls junior varsity basketball team. At Port Allegany, he coached both the girls and boys junior varsity basketball teams and served as assistant track and field coach. He had many fond memories of his teaching and coaching career.

Duane was predeceased by parents; his brother Norman Gregg, sister-in-law, Joann Gregg, and sister-in-law, Diane Michelitsch.

In addition to his wife, Duane is survived by his sister, Mariam Gregg Brumfield; sister-in-law Sandra Gregg; brother-in-law Joseph Michelitsch; nephew Craig (Katy) Brumfield; nephew Cory (Ingrid) Brumfield; nephew Mark Michelitsch; nieces, Paula (Brian) Gregg Marsh, Kristin (Norman) Brumfield Tipton, Danielle (Michelitsch) Selvidge; great-nieces and -nephews Holly Cornelius, Alyssa Cornelius, Ryan Michelitsch and D.J. Michelitsch; great-great-nephew, Wyatt Michelitsch; and great-great-nieces, Aurora Brumfield and Ella Brumfield.

During his younger years, Duane was an avid bowler. Although a 300 game remained elusive, he did achieve a 299 score. His teammates presented him with a bowling pin bearing those bright red numbers. In recent years, he enjoyed golfing with his good buddies, Grover, Malon and Herb. He only wished he had started sooner! For many years, Duane and Mary enjoyed traveling and had visited all of the states except Alaska and Hawaii. His other interests included reading, following his favorite sports teams and maintaining his home and property. He especially enjoyed spending time with his wife and family.

Duane will be long remembered by family and his many friends for his willingness to help others, generous nature, good sense of humor and contagious smile. He was dearly loved by his wife and family and will be greatly missed.

Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday (April 28, 2026) at Hartle-Tarbox Funeral Homes Inc., 105 Main St. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday (April 29, 2026) at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church.
