‘Round the Square: Wildly overpriced
CARS: Some cars are wildly overpriced right now — and CarEdge’s new data shows just how far off the rails the market has gone. The consumer‑advocacy platform released its latest analysis of the most overpriced vehicles in America, and the numbers are eye‑opening.
CarEdge identified 13 models with extreme markups or catastrophic resale value. Among the biggest offenders:
- Honda Prelude: Dealers are adding $10,000–$25,000 over MSRP. One Virginia dealer marked up a 200‑hp hybrid coupe by $25,000 — Porsche money for a Honda.
- Toyota RAV4 Prime: “Market adjustments” of $3,000–$5,000 are pushing a $45,000 SUV past $50,000.
- Jeep Grand Wagoneer: With 428 days of inventory, dealers are cutting $25,000+ off sticker and still can’t move them.
- Dodge Charger: A 452‑day supply, the worst in the country. The new electrified version is sitting untouched.
- Tesla Model X: Loses 63% of its value in five years.
- Land Rover: The most expensive brand to own — $17,450 in 10‑year maintenance plus 60%+ depreciation.
CarEdge also released its 2026 resale‑value rankings, analyzing more than 200 models. Depreciation remains one of the least understood — and most expensive — parts of ownership.
Top value‑retaining brands include Toyota, Subaru, Honda and Mazda, all holding 59 to 64% of their value after five years. Trucks and SUVs dominate, but performance cars like the Chevrolet Corvette also rank high.
Worst resale performers include the Toyota Mirai, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Nissan Armada and Nissan LEAF. Five‑year leaders are GMC Sierra 3500HD (80.3%), Toyota Land Cruiser, Subaru BRZ, Toyota Tundra and Jeep Wrangler.
