Dan Shultz
WALLA WALLA, WASH. — Dan McLloyd Shultz, 87, formerly of Bradford, Pa., died in Walla Walla on March 12, 2026.
Born in 1938 in Bradford, Pa., to Courtney Lyle Shultz and Alice Frances Scott Shultz, he discovered music early, first on clarinet and later finding his true voice on the oboe.
He studied with John Holmes of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Florian Mueller of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, earned a Bachelor of Science in music from Atlantic Union College, and a master’s degree from Andrews University. He devoted his life to music education.
Shultz taught and conducted at the academy and college levels, chaired music departments at Union College (Lincoln, Neb.) and Walla Walla College (Walla Walla), served on the Walla Walla Symphony Board (including as president from 1985 to 1988), and founded the International Adventist Musicians Association in 1984.
A prolific historian and author, he wrote “The Twisted Tree” (family history), “A Great Tradition” (music history at Walla Walla College), “A Dream Fulfilled” (Walla Walla Symphony centennial history), and the “Adventist Musicians Biographical Resource.” He also composed several band works, including two recognized as official U.S. Bicentennial activities in 1976.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn G. Stevens Shultz; four children from his first marriage to JoAn Bell; and extended family. Dan will be remembered for his musicianship, scholarship and lifelong generosity to students, colleagues and family.
