‘Round the Square: Don’t worry, be happy
HAPPY: It’s been 38 years since Bobby McFerrin released that simple song “Don’t Worry Be Happy,” and a whole lot has changed since then.
Wallet Hub has released a report on the happiest states in the U.S., and we found the results to be rather interesting.
Perhaps it’s not a surprise that Hawaii is considered the happiest state, but the emotional and physical well-being rank there was two. What state was number one in that category? New Jersey. We wouldn’t have thought that from all the mob movies.
In the overall rank, Maryland was second and Nebraska was third. Must be something in the corn.
New York was number 16 — we’re thinking upstate, because the surly reputation of those in NYC is a matter of pride. Pennsylvania was listed at 18th. Again, we’re thinking probably not in Philadelphia.
The unhappiest of all was West Virginia, which also came in last in emotional and physical well-being and work environment. Yikes. There can’t be that many people still laboring away by hand in the coal mines, right?
Number one for work environment and for community and environmental rank is Utah. Perhaps the large number of Mormons and their commitment to obedience figures into that.
Idaho is number two in both of those categories. We can see that. Potatoes make us happy, too.
Florida, home to the “Happiest Place on Earth,” Walt Disney World, came in 14th place overall, 21st for work environment and 47th for community and environmental rank. We figure that last one has something to do with headlines like “Florida man says he was kidnapped by dolphins, forced to build an underwater city.” As we say ’round these parts, something ain’t right.
