‘Round the Square: Letters from Harvey, part 4 of 4
MALAY 2: The second part of the Harvey Phillips letter home from the Malay Peninsula:
“You would have difficulty in finding out where are the Malays on this island for the population consists of 350,000 Chinese, 150,000 Indians, and 30,000 Malays. Once we get up into the interior we shall find them, I suppose. Singapore and Penang are Crown colonies. North of Singapore are the Federated Malay States with the capital at Kuala Lumpur and a British advisor plus a native ruler. Then to the north of these running up to Siam and Burma are the Unfederated Malay States with native rulers. The most powerful native ruler seems to be the Sultan of Jahore. Our trip takes us but about 400 miles up the Peninsula.
From Penang which we leave about Feb. 25 we sail not stopping at Colombo to our disappointment. This is the only thing on the entire trip that hasn’t been in our favor. Last night eight of us went to see the Wild West Rodeo Performance which was supposed to be given by the Wembley Exposition company. It was good fun, but I don’t believe more than one rider of the crowd had ever seen Wembley.”
On June 21, a note in The Era reported that Harvey Phillips had been met in Europe by his mother, and the pair flew home to New York together.
His travel exploits continued to delight Bradford residents. In 1932, he accompanied Robert Crawford, baritone, on a singing tour of Alaska as his publicity manager. An account of the journey is again printed on the pages of The Era. He shared stories of his trips with groups around Bradford as well.
