‘Round the Square: The place to be

TOURISM: Pennsylvania is the place to be in 2026.

A massive tourism surge this year is driven by the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Declaration of Independence, with over 204 million annual visitors generating more than $43.3 billion in spending and supporting over 500,000 jobs.

Major events, including the FIFA World Cup, MLB All-Star Game, and NCAA tournament in Philadelphia, alongside the NFL Draft in Pittsburgh, are driving record-high levels of activity.

“Party like it’s 1776,” reads the introduction on visitpa.com for the America250 celebration.

“The 250th anniversary, or the ‘Semiquincentennial,’ of the founding of this great nation will soon be here and just as Pennsylvania played a critical role back in 1776, Pennsylvania is primed to once again be in the spotlight in 2026 with events galore. From grand celebrations the week of July 4th to world-class sporting events throughout the year to major milestone anniversaries of our cities, towns, museums, and monuments, the entire commonwealth is joining in the Semiquincentennial commemoration.”

The site visitpa.com/blog/post/getaway-guide-americas-250th-anniversary/ is filled with activities and schedules for celebrations this year.

Philadelphia will be a hub of activities for much of the year.

And the Dark Skies of Cherry Springs and the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon garner a mention: “Almost 50 miles long and more than 1,500 feet deep in places, Pine Creek Gorge is often referred to as the “Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania.” With spectacular views, abundant wildlife, and beautiful foliage, this stunning outdoor attraction is just an hour’s drive south of Cherry Springs State Park, which boasts some of the best stargazing in the northeast thanks to its exceptionally dark skies free of light pollution. Together, they provide the ideal setting for a Great American Getaway.”
