‘Round the Square: Grossology

GROSS: The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, N.Y. has something coming up that nearly every middle school kid will think is the greatest thing ever — Grossology: The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body.

“Explore all things stinky, crusty and slimy at Grossology: The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body, which opens on the museum’s first floor on Jan. 17. Based on the best-selling book Grossology, the exhibit uses sophisticated animatronics and imaginative interactives to tell you the good, the bad and the downright ugly about runny noses, body odor and much more.”

It’s educational. Gross, but hey, it’s part of everyone’s lives.

“Stop by the ‘Toot Toot’ area to create different sounds that replicate the physics of gas. Mimic the buildup of acid indigestion by causing the ‘Burp Machine’ to release a giant belch. Climb a large-scale replica of human skin and discover other mysterious ways your body’s biology does what it does to keep you healthy.”

The exhibition, based on the book series by Penguin Random House LLC, remains through May 3.

There’s more to see than the gross stuff. On the museum’s second floor, there’s a short-term exhibit Hello Cutie: Our Favorite Kitty featuring Hello Kitty.

“Discover Hello Kitty’s universal appeal and view a range of other artifacts, such as stuffed animals, fashion dolls, jewelry boxes, postage stamps, and playing cards. Learn about Hello Kitty goods sold in Japan, like Hinamatsuri dolls made for the Girl’s Day celebration and yokaipouches that are named after playful spirits in Japanese folklore. Engage in the decades-old debate — is Hello Kitty a symbol of femininity and strength, a ‘useless commodity’ or just childhood fun at its best?”
